PHILADELPHIA - The official start to the college basketball season may begin October 12 when men's and women's teams around the nation can begin practice, but, at Temple University, the Owls' basketball teams will make their public debut with Cherry and White Night on Friday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. The free event, open to the public and held at McGonigle Hall, will feature the Temple men's and women's basketball teams each holding separate scrimmages and culminate with a "Walk For The Cure" led by head coaches Fran Dunphy and Dawn Staley and their respective teams.
"This is a great night to celebrate Temple basketball, and what better way to do that than to raise money, and awareness for the fight against cancer," said Dunphy, National Chairman for the Coaches vs. Cancer Organization.
"We teach our teams the importance of giving back to the community and this is just one of the many ways that both teams do that during the course of the year." Staley echoed.
Temple is one of three schools nationally selected to participate in this new Coaches vs. Cancer activity. The "Walk for the Cure" will take place immediately following Cherry and White Night, with the coaches and teams leading their fans for a walk around campus. There is no charge to participate in the event, but the first 400 supporters who make a donation will receive a commemorative tee-shirt.
The other teams participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer walk on their campuses are Saint Joseph's and Syracuse.
Besides the scrimmages, Cherry and White Night will include various contests featuring the teams and a question and answer session with the two coaches. The Temple Cheerleaders, Diamond Gems Dance Team, and members of the Temple Marching Band will also be in attendance.
The event will correspond with the distribution of student tickets to the Temple-Penn State football game scheduled for November 10 at Lincoln Financial Field. A wristband will be distributed to current Temple students upon entry to the event. Each wristband will be redeemed immediately following the "Walk for the Cure" for a Temple-Penn State student ticket (instructions for redemption of wristbands will be made available at Basketball Cherry and White Night). A limited number of wristbands are available, and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Besides Coaches vs. Cancer, Temple Athletics is also partnering with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure with tee-shirts being sold at the event and Take Charge - Take the Test, which will offer free and private HIV testing during the event.
