Men's Tennis Opens Season At Bollettieri Treibly Open

BRADENTON, FL - Junior Eduardo Saavedra led the Temple men's tennis team's in its opening weekend of competition at the Bollettieri Treibly Open. Saavedra won one singles match and one doubles match.

"The tournament was very successful," said head coach Steve Mauro. "Our players competed and won some matches against op 20 teams. It was the strongest field of players that Temple men's tennis has ever competed against. We hope to keep the momentum going this weekend in South Carolina."

In the singles first round, freshman Andrew Choi overcame Georgetown's Paul Doucas, 10-6, for his first collegiate win. Choi's next win came in the fourth round of play against Central Florida's Jimmy Roesch, 10-6. In his first collegiate competition Choi ended singles round play 2-3. Sophomore Pavlos Stephanides recorded a win in the singles first round play against Miami's Hector Nieto, 10-5. Stephanides continued on to record his second singles win in round four against Alabama's Taylor Striplin, 10-8. Saavedra defeated Georgetown's Will Doucas, 10-6, in the singles round four.

Freshman Robert Velazquez found himself in five tough singles matches and did not record any singles play wins this weekend. Senior Zach Tobias was 0-5 in singles play.

Velazquez and Saavedra were paired in the men's doubles. In the first round the pair found themselves competing against Central Florida. The hard-fought match ended in a loss for the Owls, 9-8 (5). The pair continued on to the second round where they recorded their first doubles win this season over Georgetown's David Tillem and Ted Tymang, 8-4.

Also paired in the doubles competition were Tobias and Stephandies. The pair lost their second round doubles match, which was their only doubles match of the competition, to Armstrong Atlantic State, 8-6. Spencer and Choi did not compete in the doubles first round, but the pair lost in the second round to Miami, 8-5.

The Owls next hit the courts Friday, October 12 when they travel to South Carolina for the University of South Carolina Invite. Tournament play will take place all weekend ending on Sunday, October 14.
