AMBLER, PA - It was a magical end to a not so magical season for the Temple University men's soccer team, as freshman Brian Weinhardt scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lead the Owls past Massachusetts, 1-0, on Senior Day, at the Ambler Sports Complex. With its first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the year, Temple ends its season with a mark of 5-11-2 (1-6-1 A-10), while the Minutemen fall to 11-7-0 (6-3-0 in A-10).
The Owls came out and played their finest half of season, out-shooting the Minutemen 14-3 over the first 45 minutes. In the second half, the Owls continued their dominance on offense registering nine shots compared to UMass' four.
In overtime, the Owls were dealt a vicious blow as Kenechukwu Nwanah was ejected in the 97th minute for a hard foul. Forced to play a man down, the Cherry and White hung tough. In the second overtime, sophomore J.T. Noone drilled a corner kick that would eventually find the wide open foot of Weinhardt for the game-winning goal in the 109th minute. The goal was Weinhardt's second of the season.
Junior Matt Chevrollier led the Owls strong offensive attack with six shots. Head coach David MacWilliams split the goalkeeper duties using his two seniors, Trevor Lyman and Tony Pratico, as each was playing his final collegiate game. Lyman did not have to make a save in the first half while Pratico, who ends his career with the lowest career goals against average, registered three saves.
Fellow senior forwards Mike Minai and David Suah both saw time in the match.
