PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's basketball captured a 74-34 win over Kent State on Wednesday evening at the Liacouras Center.
Temple improved to 4-5 overall, while Kent State fell to 1-6 in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
Kent State opened the game with the first three points, but that was the only lead the Golden Flashes would get. Starting with a three-pointer from point guard Ashley Morris, Temple opened its scoring with a 9-0 run. Allowing just four KSU points, TU added a 14-0 run to go ahead by 16 points, 23-7 with 9:39 remaining in the first half. The Owls held KSU scoreless for 10-and-a-half minutes while improving its lead. TU held a 21-point edge at intermission, 33-12.
In the second half, Temple built upon its lead, going ahead by 40 twice. The Owls played its entire roster of 13 players, while Kent played all eight dressed players.
"I thought we came out and played a little sluggishly in the first half," TU head coach Dawn Staley said. "That's the fight we're going to fight. We played with a lot more energy in the second half."
Four Owls netted double figures, led by senior Candice Borrows' career-high 12 points, all from long range. Her four treys were also a career high. Senior Lady Comfort, senior Ashley Morris, and junior Shanea Cotton added 11 points each. Cotton added 10 rebounds for her first career double-double performance. Junior Shenita Landry grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds.
"Candice is a very good shooter," Staley added. "We put her in sooner than we normally do. She played extremely well."
"I feel pretty good," Borrows said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity." Junior Anna Kowalska was the only Golden Flash player in double digits. She finished with 12 points.
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Kent State, 41-29. The Owls shot 52 percent from the field, while holding Kent to 24 percent for the game. TU went 8-of-24 from the line, while KSU was 10-of-14.
"That's one of the problems we have to solve," Staley said about the free throw shooting.
Temple travels to No. 3 Maryland on Sunday, Dec. 9 for a 2 p.m. game at the Comcast Center. The Big Talker WPHT 1210 AM, will broadcast the game live.
