FORT PIERCE, FL - The Temple golf team performed well in its first event of the spring season, carding three rounds well under three hundred (293-293-286) at the Treasure Coast Classic en route to a 20-over 872 total. Unfortunately for the Owls, the event, played March 7-9 at the par 71, Indian Hills Golf Club, boasted a strong field and the Cherry White placed 10th out of 11 entries.
The Owls' 872 total marked its best three-round score since the team posted an 867 at the James Madison Invitational in October 2004. In addition, the team's final round 286 at Indian Hills was its best round since it posted a second-round 278 in that JMU event.
Two first-year players paced the Cherry & White. First-year junior Paul Amess led the Owls, carding a one-under 212 (73-70-69) to finish tied for 26th in the 70-player field. Freshman Adam Pifer, following up an extremely strong fall campaign, also performed well. The Telford, Pa. native registered a six-over 219 (74-73-72) to place 49th. Senior Logan Terry (50th, 72-77-72=221), sophomore Eric Plisko (t-62nd, 74-76-74=224) and senior James Boose (t-65th, 78-74-73=225) rounded-out the Temple scorecard.
Temple's two alternate competitors, junior Kevin Busteed and sophomore Hugo Braune also played well. Busteed turned in a one-over 214 (72-71-71=214) and Braune posted a five-over 218 (71-75-72). Had their scores been included on the Temple scorecard, the Owls would have approached par for the tournament.
Keegan Bradley led host St. John's to victory. He shot a 7-under par 64 to claim the individual title by eight strokes over Connecticut's Jason Parajeckas. Bradley took the lead from teammate George Zolotas in Thursday's second round and finished the tournament at 21-under par. The Red Storm led the entire tournament, powered early by Zolotas, who set a course record with a 61 in the first round on Wednesday. Florida Atlantic placed second at 821, nine shots behind St. John's.
Temple, under the leadership of third-year head coach Brian Rogers, returns to the links for the William & Mary Invitational, played March 26-27 at Kingsmill Resort.
