NORFOLK, VA - Freshman Stig Haddal in the 51st minute broke a scoreless tie and propelled Old Dominion to a 1-0 win over visiitng Temple in the STIHL Soccer Classic finale. Both teams are now 2-3-1 on the season.
The Monarchs dominated the Owls throughout the match, taking 20 shots to Temple's one. Senior Trevor Lyman, making his third straight start in place on an injured Tony Pratico, made four of his eight saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep ODU off the board. One of his saves was on a penalty kick when he denied Trevor Banks in the 41st minute.
ODU goalie Evan Newton (one save) cleared the ball to the feet of freshman T.J. Beaulieu who would take one touch and then pass the ball through the middle of the field to Haddal. Haddal took two touches and let loose into the back of the net for the game winner at the 50:50 mark.
A combined 30 fouls were called in the game with five yellow cards being issued.
Junior Joe Cartwright and freshman Jared Harris represented the owls on the all-tournament team.
Temple next plays at Hartford on Saturday, September 22 at 6:00 p.m.
