Dayton, Ohio- Shanea Cotton scored a career-high 13 points and Lindsay Kimmel and LaKeisha Eaddy each had 12 points but it was not enough to overcome four Dayton Flyers in double figures as Temple dropped its Atlantic 10 opener, 62-49, to Dayton on Saturday afternoon. The opening conference loss is just the second in Dawn Staley's career and her third to the Flyers overall. The Owls return to Philadelphia with a 7-10 record (0-1 A-10), while Dayton is riding a school record 15 game winning streak and a 15-12 mark.
Temple shot just 34% from the field, while committing 16 turnovers. Shenita Landry had a game-high three blocks, while Lady Comfort grabbed six of the Owls' 30 total rebounds. Kimmel was four-of-nine from long range
Temple began the game with a 4-0 run, holding the Flyers without a point until Kristin Daugherty's lay-up made it 4-2 at 18:25. The Owls continued to roll, however, and took a 15-7 lead by the 15 minute mark behind strong inside play by Shanea Cotton. The junior netted six points and had one steal in the first five minutes, while helping to hold Dayton scoreless for over four minutes. Daugherty broke the UD scoreless drought with a basket at 12:13 and sparked a 4-0 Flyer run that made it a four-point game (15-11) just a minute later. Temple continued to struggle offensively and a trey by Kiki Lund at 9:39 made it17-16, the smallest differential since the opening whistle. Lindsay Kimmel's three-pointer at 8:22 gave TU its first field goal in seven minutes and a bit of breathing room (20-16) but the offensive spurt was short-lived, as another Owl scoring drought and a Dayton trey made it a one-point game yet again at 6:23. The Flyers continued to fight, while Temple committed multiple turnovers, and Brittany Holterman's lay-up with four minutes remaining gave the home team its first lead, while sparking a 9-0 run to make it 28-22 with just over two minutes to play. Kimmel finally got the Cherry and White back on track with a trey at 1:34 but the Flyers used a 4-2 run to close the half with a 32-27 result. Kimmel led the charge in the first stanza with nine points but it was not enough to offset 13 Temple turnovers and 11 points by Karah Cloxton.
Holterman started off the second half scoring for Dayton at 18:07 and Lady Comfort answered with a lay-up of own at 17:50 but the Flyers used an 11-1 run to open up a 14-point lead (45-30) by 13:20. LaKeisha Eaddy ended the Flyer run with Temple's second field goal of the half at 13:07 and continued to be TU's lone source of offensive power over the next few minutes. Quiet for most of the game, Ashley Morris hit three free throws at 8:57 to allow Temple to climb back within nine points (49-40) and Temple began a new game plan. The Owls began to substitute on each offensive and defensive possession, desperately trying to find a combination that would put them back on top. A 5-0 run got Temple within eight points (53-45) with just under five minutes to play but that would be as close as it would be as Dayton rolled to its 15th straight win, 62-49.
Freshman Daugherty earned a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards, while Cloxton had 16 points, thanks to a four-for-four performance from long range. Oakland and Ashley Armstrong each contributed 12 points a piece.
Temple returns home to host St. Bonaventure on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Liacouras Center.
