PHILADELPHIA - Temple opened a five-game homestand with its third win of the season with a 79-50 shellacking of winless Hampton on Saturday at the Liacouras Center.
The Owls improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Lady Pirates fell to 0-5.
Sophomore Lindsay Kimmel opened the game with her signature three to begin a 7-0 run. Hampton responded with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 9-9. After a 15-15 tie, point guard LaKeisha Eadddy made the first of two treys to put the Owls ahead by double digits, and they never looked back. TU built its lead to 17 points at intermission, 44-27.
In the second half, Temple increased its lead. Sophomore Marli Bennett converted a lay-up to give the Owls a 20-point edge. Kimmel nailed another three to complete a 10-0 run. TU finished with a 29-point victory.
"I never doubted that we'd get it rolling," said first-year Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza. "I knew once we settled down, we could put this game away."
Three Owls netted double figures, led by senior Shenita Landry's 16 points. Eaddy finished with 14 points and six assists which moved her onto TU's career Top 10 list for assists. She now has 230 assists in her career. Senior Shanea Cotton netted her first double-double of the season (third of her career) with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Kimmel finished with nine points, all from three-point range. Bennett and freshman Kristen McCarthy each scored a career-high eight points.
Senior Chinyere Ukoh was the only Lady Pirate in double-figure scoring with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Overall, Temple out-shot Hampton, converting 46 percent compared to 26.7 percent. Both teams had 40 rebounds. The Owls nailed seven three-point buckets, while HU had one.
Temple (3-1) hosts No. 13 Rutgers (2-2) on Monday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. at the Liacouras Center. CBS College Sports will televise the game live.
"It's a big test, but the Auburn game was a big test, too," Cardoza said of Rutgers. "It's just another opponent. We're going to enjoy this win and get ready for Rutgers tomorrow."
