Temple Encourages Fans To Think Pink And Pack The House This Sunday, February 17

PHILADELPHIA-The Temple women's basketball team is encouraging fans to "Think Pink" and "Pack the House" at its game this Sunday, February 17 against Duquesne. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. By attending Sunday's game, fans can not only help in the fight against breast cancer, but also to set a new attendance record for a Temple women's basketball game.Wear pink and get in for just $1.
In conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA)'s "Think Pink" initiative, a portion of Sunday's ticket sales will be donated to Susan G. Komen For the Cure. Temple's "Be Wise for the Cure" breast cancer awareness t-shirts will also be sold at the game with a portion of proceeds going to the Komen Foundation. Over 600 schools have joined the WBCA's unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond during the week of February 8-17.
The contest against the Dukes also marks Temple's "Pack the House" game. The Owls are competing against other Atlantic 10 schools in an attendance challenge. The school with the highest recorded attendance will be crowned the Conference winner and will go on to compete against other conference champions to be the 2008 NCAA Women's Basketball Pack the House Challenge Champion. Not only will the winning school receive a variety of prizes, but the NCAA will also make a $500 donation to a non-profit organization on behalf of each of the 32 winners.
All tickets for the game are $5. Tickets for groups of 10 or more fans are only $3 and can be ordered by calling 215-204-6710.
"Be Wise for the Cure" shirts are available in black only (sizes small through x-large) for only $10 and can be purchased throughout the month of February at the Temple Athletic Department, located on the 4th floor of 1700 North Broad Street. Series Record This is the 37th meeting between the Temple Owls and the Duquesne Dukes. Temple leads the series, 26-10. The teams last played on February 23, 2007, when the Owls defeated the Dukes, 72-43.WNBA Connections Today's game pits two of the most successful point guards of all time against one another. Both Dawn Staley and Suzie McConnell-Serio are Olympic gold medal winners, former WNBA players and winners of the WNBA Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. While Staley was playing for the Charlotte Sting, McConnell-Serio was playing for the Cleveland Rockers, a squad for which Lisa Boyer was an assistant. The Pittsburgh native later faced Staley as the coach of the Minnesota Lynx from 2003-04. In the October 29, 2007 issue of Sports Illustrated the two were named the best basketball players, male or female, at their height. Staley is 5-6 and McConnell-Serio is 5-4.
Greatest of All Time Dawn Staley is just two wins away from becoming Temple's all-time winningest coach. In her eighth season, Staley currently boasts a 165-78 record. Only Linda Hill MacDonald, who led Temple from 1980-90, has more wins, finishing with a 166-130 mark in 10 seasons.
