Women's Basketball Travels To Saint Joseph's Wednesday Night

PHILADELPHIA-The Temple women's basketball team (15-11, 8-2 A-10) is looking to help Dawn Staley make history yet again when it travels to Saint Joseph's (14-11, 6-4 A-10) on Wednesday night. With a victory, Staley will become Temple's all-time winningest women's basketball coach with 167 wins. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Saint Joe's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
TU vs. SJU Part II
This is the second meeting of the season between Saint Joseph's and Temple. The Owls took the last meeting, 70-67, on January 30, thanks to two free throws by Lady Comfort with six tenths of a second remaining. Comfort finished with a game-high 24 points, including a career-best 12-of-13 from the line. Ashley Morris followed with 14 points and five assists, while LaKeisha Eaddy had 12 points. Shenita Landry grabbed a career-high six steals.
It's Coming Down to the Wire
With just four games remaining in the regular season, the race for the Atlantic 10 regular season champion is really heating up. George Washington, Xavier and Temple are all tied atop the Conference standings with an 8-2 record.
Series Record
This is the 64th meeting between the Temple Owls and the Saint Joseph's Hawks. Saint Joe's leads the series, 39-25, which began in the 1938 season. The teams last played on January 30, 2008, when the Owls defeated the Hawks, 70-67.
Temple topped Duquesne, 74-66, on Sunday. With the win Dawn Staley tied the record for most wins in TU women's basketball history with a 166-78 record. The Owls led 40-30 at halftime but the second half belonged to Ashley Morris. Ahead by just three, Morris nailed a trey, her third of the game. While Duquesne never led throughout the game, the Dukes tied the contest twice. With 4:33 left to go, it was a whole new ball game. Lady Comfort made the front end of a two-shot foul and Morris added a jumper to give the Owls a three-point edge, 63-60. Temple finished the game with a 12-2 run. Morris led the Owls with 27 points, including three buckets from long range. Comfort followed with fourth double-double performance of the year, finishing with 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Shenita Landry came off the bench for 13 points and nine boards.
Morris leads Temple in scoring and assists, averaging 15.2 ppg and dishing 102 assists. Comfort is averaging 9.2 ppg and a team-high 8.0 rpg. Landry is posting a solid defensive effort of 25 blocks and 31 steals but LaKeisha Eaddy is tops on the squad in thefts with 39.
Four free throws and a huge stop in the final 8.4 seconds helped Saint Joseph's hold on for a 69-64 win over Richmond Saturday. For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 22-of-53 from the floor (41.5 percent), 6-of-16 from behind the arc (37.5 percent) and 19-of-25 from the line (76.0 percent). Individually, Timisha Gomez matched her career high, scoring 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range and adding six free throws. Sarah Acker posted her fifth straight double-double, scoring 18 points and adding a game-high 12 rebounds, while Amy Wold was the only other Hawk in double digits, scoring 13 off the bench.
Acker leads two Hawks in double figures with 12.7 ppg and a team-high 8.8 rpg. She is also tops in blocks with 40. Gomez is second in scoring, averaging 10.5 ppg, while Mary Kate McDade is SJU's leader in assists (101).
