ORLANDO, Fla. - The 2008 Temple University Department of Athletics has been named to the Honor Rolls for Community Service and Degree Completion by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) for the 2007-08 academic year.

"Temple University is highly deserving of this award because of its commitment to developing leadership in its student-athletes and caring for the community," said Dr. Richard Lapchick, founder and executive director of NCAS. "The award represents Temple's commitment as a role model for student-athletes to demonstrate the ultimate goal of institutions of higher education, which is to develop young people to become tomorrow's leaders."

"This is a real tribute to the genuine contributions, generosity, and unselfishness of our coaches and student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "We are quite proud of the high priority our student-athletes place on giving back to the community and helping others. Their leadership has become a distinguishing characteristic of our teams, and we look forward to maintaining this dedication to the University community and the City of Philadelphia."

During the 2006-07 academic year, Temple sponsored the Partnership Field Day (May 2, 2007) where more than 100 Temple student-athletes interacted with more than 400 students from four local elementary schools. The Owls also participated in the Choices Program, the Diamond Street Clean-up, National Girls & Women in Sports Day, and Philadelphia Cares Day. Temple hosted the first Community Partnership basketball game in the Liacouras Center.

In addition, Temple football donated $1,500 to the Fahmarr McElrathbey Trust Fund and $1,530 to the Adam Taliaferro Foundation, which led to the Owls' recognition by the Philadelphia 76ers as "Hometown Heroes". On top of the 1,000 youths that the Temple student-athletes worked with in the community, another 5,000 youths received game tickets from the athletic department.

Under the degree completion program, Temple ranked seventh nationally in student-athletes returning to school to complete their degrees following the exhaustion of their eligibility.
