PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - Junior Paul Amess carded the sixth-best single round in program history, a five-under 67, to lead Temple to a second place finish at the SIU Edwardsville Cougar Classic at the PGA Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. Amess, who placed second with a 75-67=142 (-2), also had the best single round since Billy Mullen shot a 66 on October 10, 2004.
Freshman Sasha Bozic (71-81=152, +8) had a tough second day, but still placed seventh in the 42-player field. Classmate Andrew Mason finished 12th with a 74-80=154 (+10), while sophomore Eric Plisko (78-80=158) and junior Adam Pifer (77-81=158) tied for 20th with +14 scores.
Indianapolis' Jordan Hueber followed his school record 65 with a 75 to edge Amess for the individual title (65-75=140, -4). The Greyhounds cruised to the team victory by 17 strokes with a two round score of 286-302=588 (+12).
Temple finished in second (297-308=605, +29), followed by Minnesota State (313-309=622, +46), host SIUE (308-317=625, +49) and Coe College (319-319=638, +62).
Only five scores have bettered Amess' round of 67 today in program history. Walter Brown holds the school record with a 63 set in 1973. Jon Rusk carded a 65 in 2002, while Mullen has a pair of 66s to his name in 2003 and 2004. Chris Bartolacci also had a 66 in 1999.
The Owls, under first-year head coach Brian Quinn, return to the links on Monday at the William and Mary Invitational.
