Temple Rowing Wins Mayor's Cup

TAMPA, Fla. - The Temple men's and women's rowing teams won the 2008 Mayor's Cup in Tampa on Saturday.
The Owls, who beat out eight other teams for the title, captured first place in three event finals. Jacksonville finished second in the team standings, following by Yale, Emory, Marietta, Stetson, Central Florida, Florida Tech, and Wesleyan.
The women's varsity eight, comprised of coxswain Jill Ploof, Anne Mikolajewski, Laura Altimari, Bailey Chick, Laura Scullin, Mary Webster, Molly Peach, Jess Herrmann, and Amanda Barr, captured its final in 5:13.1. Marietta was second (5:16.5), followed by Jacksonville (5:18.7), Stetson (5:28.3), Emory (5:36.5), and Florida Tech (5:49.8). TU also captured first in the morning heat in 4:57.1.
TU's second varsity eight, comprised of coxswain Maureen McDermitt, Laura Austin, Katie Hoban, Danielle Britton, Nicole Wagner, Cait Pennington, Jackie Swan, Colleen Bianco, and Kelly McAndrew, captured an open water win in 5:35.8 over Stetson (6:00.9).
In the frosh eight event, Temple, comprised of coxswain Erin Buchannan, Dana DiPentino, Megan Silk, Nicole Miller, Rebekah Barnes, Megan Rudge, Kayla Heston, Rebecca Letizia, and Allison Bates, finished first of four boats in 4:38.5. Jacksonville (4:41.7) was second, followed by Stetson (4:45.7) and Marietta (4:46.4).
The women's frosh four, comprised of coxswain Erin Buchannan, Dana DiPentinto, Megan Silk, Sarah Cadman, and Rebekah Barnes, finished second in 5:48.2 behind Emory (5:42.5). Central Florida was third (5:59.3), followed by Jacksonville (6:16.1) and Stetson (6:34.8).
In the men's events, Temple's second varsity four, manned by coxswain Mike Berger, Bill Gennaro, Brendan Cunningham, Sam Cunningham, and Joe Welsh, won in 5:09.9. Jacksonville was second in 5:14.3, followed by Central Florida (5:25.7), Stetson (5:43.2), and Central Florida (5:52.2).
TU's men's varsity eight, manned by coxswain Rory Roberts, Tom Masterson, Bob Protesto, Tom Haubrich, Don Powers, Justin Alphis, Nick Vlahos, Pat Curran, and Pat Welsh, finished second in 4:20.2. Yale won the event in 4:15.7. Emory (4:23.3) was third, followed by Wesleyan (4:25.2), Florida Tech (4:28.4), and Colgate (4:40.6). Temple won the morning heat in the event in 4:15.3.
Manned by coxswain Tom Goldner, Sam Cunningham, Chris Schwartz, Bill Gennaro, Brendan Cunningham, Scott Herring, Joe Welsh, Mike Whitman, and Austin Philips, the Owls' second varsity eight also finished second (4:23.6). Yale captured the race in 4:28.7, followed by Jacksonville (4:32.9), Wesleyan (4:33.4), Colgate (4:36.8), and Florida Tech (4:44.1).
Temple returns to action on March 29 when the men's and women's crews host the 26th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
