PHILADELPHIA - Longtime Temple University sports information director Al Shrier has been named the recipient of the 2008 Bob Vetrone Atlantic 10 Media Award.

Shrier is the dean among the nation's sports information directors, serving at Temple since 1953. His service to the media is second only to his dedication to the student-athlete. He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors Hall of Fame, the Temple University Hall of Fame, the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame, and the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

The award recognizes those whose service, professionalism and commitment have made a lasting contribution to its student-athletes and institutions. The Atlantic 10 instituted the award in 2006 to honor the memory of the late Bob Vetrone. Vetrone's involvement in basketball covered the spectrum, first as a sportswriter, then with the Big Five, and then as sports information director at La Salle.

Prior recipients include Bob Vetrone (2006) and veteran Providence Journal sportswriter Paul Kenyon (2007).

Shrier will be honored during the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship, March 12-15, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
