AMHERST, MA - Junior Devon DuPont and freshman Assata Cowart each won events on Sunday to lead the Temple women's track team to its best finish since 2003 with a fourth place showing at the Atlantic 10 Championship at the University of Massachusetts. Dupont won the heptathlon with 4480 points, while Cowart took the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:02.42. Temple was just 2.5 points behind second place Dayton and Rhode Island.

Combined with sophomore Melissa Gale's victory in the pole vault yesterday, Temple had three individual champions, the most since 2003 when five athletes or relays won events. That squad also placed third in the A-10, TU's best-ever showing.

Junior Carlleen Allison and senior Cheryl Anscombe provided a strong effort in the sprints. Allison was third in the 400m (55.96) and fifth in the 200m (24.99), while Anscombe was fourth in the 400m (56.45) and sixth in the 200m (25.31).

Sophomore Brittney McRae finished third in the 100m hurdles finals (15.13) and freshman Tashima Stephens was fifth in the 800m (2:15.86). Junior Jasselle Cruz was fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:05.25).

The Owls also earned plenty of points in the relays, as the 4x100 placed second (47.24) and the 4x400 was third (3:47.93).

In the field events, junior Kimberlyn Hill was third (38-1 1/2) and sophomore Sequoia McBall placed fourth (37-9 1/4) in the triple jump. Junior Amanda Cole was eighth in the discus (121-4) and tenth in the shot put (38-9 3/4).

Junior Lamarra Currie captured gold in the 100m and 200m dashes and teammate Aja Jackson won the 800m and 1,500m as Charlotte won its third consecutive women's title. Charlotte women amassed 203 points while Dayton and Rhode Island tied for second with 110.5 points apiece.

It marked the highest-ever finish for UD, which finished seventh a year ago. Temple placed fourth with 108 points, followed by Richmond (68), Massachusetts (60), La Salle (57), Saint Joseph's (48), Duquesne (33.5), Saint Louis (22.5), Fordham (21) and Xavier (16).

Temple returns to the track in two weeks at the ECAC Championship.
