PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University men's soccer team opened its season against Villanova Friday afternoon. The Owls stuggled to get their offense charged tallying their lone goal in the 80th minute in a 3-1 loss.
The Wildcats attacked early, scoring their first goal in the third minute of action. Sean Mergenthal found the back twice in the first half, once on a header and once on a cross from teammate Kevin Garcia.
Villanova added to its tally with a goal in the 71st minute by Will Ogden.
Temple junior J.T. Noone helped the Owls avoid the shutout as he scored unassisted in the 80th minute.
Temple's defense, which had been a strong point all last season, allowed three goals. Owls keeper Bret Mollon surrendered three goals on six shots in his first career start for the squad.
The Owls will compete in the Lafayette Classic on September 5, at 7:00, against host Lafayette.
