Men's Tennis Remains Undefeated Midway Through City 6 Tournament

PHILADELPHIA - Midway through the Philadelphia City Six Tournament, the Temple men's tennis team is making its case as the best team in the city. The Owls are undefeated in singles and doubles through 12 matches, with each semifinal singles match involving a TU player. Action continues on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center in Manayunk.
Top-seeded Nathan Spunda advanced to the semifinals of Flight A with a 2-6, 6-2, (15-9) victory over Penn's Justen Roth and will meet the Quakers' Dmitry Bury. Also in Flight A, freshman Filip Rams advanced to the semis with victories over La Salle's Andy Petrusky (6-1, 6-1) and Drexel's Carlos Pangilinan (7-6, 6-3). He will meet Saint Joseph's Pat Adams in the semifinals.
In Flight B, freshman Dmitry Vizhunov captured a pair of victories in his first action as an Owl. He beat La Salle's Jon Maula, 6-2, 6-0, and Drexel's Sabyaschi Bose, 6-2, 6-0 to move to the semifinals. Junior Ricardo Velazquez received a first round bye in Flight B and beat La Salle's Morgan Abrams-Nicholas, 6-1, 6-0. He will meet Penn's Jason Lin in the semis.
Junior Pavlos Stephanides received a first-round bye in Flight C and defeated Saint Joseph's Brian Costello, 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals. Classmate Eduardo Saavedra beat Drexel's Ben Trabin, 6-4, 6-2 and La Salle's Bill Nason, 6-1, 6-0 to also move to the semifinals.
In doubles, Spunda and Velazquez teamed to beat Mike Stauble and Nick Tuxen of Saint Joseph's, 8-2, in opening round action. Stephanides and Vizhunov won 8-6 over Drexel's Joe Koebele and Pangilinan, while Saavedra and Rams won 8-2 over La Salle's Gennaoui and Maula.
