Spunda, Rams Reach Flight Semifinals At UNC Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, NC - Junior Nathan Spunda and freshman Filip Rams each reached the semifinals of their respective flights on Saturday at the UNC Invitational. Spunda won two matches in the B Flight while Rams won his first two matches in the C Flight.
"I was real happy the way the men competed," head coach Steve Mauro said. "They played some of the best teams in the South Region and were very successful."
Spunda opened singles action with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over NC State's Rob Lowe on Friday. He then defeated Coastal Carolina's Dmitry Vlaskin, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to UNC Wilmington's Michael Perrerria, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Rams defeated East Carolina's Dave Masciorini, 6-3, 6-0 in opening round play of Flight C. He then took down Navy's Ramsey Lemaich, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 before falling to Coastal Carolina Dorian Sovic, 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinals.
Senior Ricardo Velazquez and freshman Dmitry Vizhunov also competed in Flight C. Both dropped their opening round matches, but rebounded in the consolation bracket. Vizhunov was a default winner in the consolation finals after beating Winthrop's Garret Lleal, 6-4, 6-1, and Elon's Clark Howell, 6-2, 5-7, (9-7).
Velazquez beat Luke Stainic of Winthrop, 6-2, 5-7, (7-5) in the consolation bracket.
