Olean, N.Y.- Down by just three points with one minute to go, LaKeisha Eaddy desperately tried to make a three-pointer to send the game into overtime but both attempts fell short, giving the St. Bonaventure womens basketball team (14-5, 3-1 A-10) a 55-52 win over Temple (11-7, 3-2 A-10) on Saturday afternoon.
Kristen McCarthy was on fire in the first half, scoring 11 of TU's 29 total points, while picking up career-highs of four steals and two blocks. The Owls made 46% of their shots but committed 12 first-half turnovers, allowing the Bonnies to keep the game close. The Cherry and White struggled to make shots in the second half, however, making just 29.4% compared to the Bonnies 52.4%.
Lindsay Kimmel began the game with her signature three-pointer to spark a 5-0 Temple run. The Bonnies got on the board at 17:55 but the Owls continued to roll, taking a 12-6 lead by 15:39. St. Bonaventure wasn't down for long, however, forcing six TU turnovers and putting together an 11-2 run to take a 17-14 lead at the 10 minute mark. McCarthy finally broke the six minute Temple scoring drought with a jumper at 8:42 to make it a one point game (17-16). Jasmine Stone made her 2008-09 debut with two blocks and a lay-up to begin a 4-0 TU run, giving the Cherry and White a 20-17 lead with five minutes remaining. St. Bonaventure only got as close as one point before allowing Temple to take a 29-23 lead at halftime.
McCarthy began the second half just as she ended the first, putting together a 5-2 run to increase TU's lead to nine points (34-25) at 17:40. SBU's Dana Mitchell netted four straight to help the Bonnies pull within three points (34-31) at the 16 minute mark. The three-point differential held until a Priscilla Edwards lay-up sparked a 5-0 run to put the Bonnies on top, 42-40, with 10 and a half minutes remaining. Eaddy's trey at 10:20 ended Temples three-minute scoring drought to spark a 6-0 run and give TU a 46-42 advantage by the nine minute mark. The game continued to be tight for the remainder of the half and a Katelyn Murray trey at the three minute mark made it a one point game, 52-51. Temples tight defense forced two straight turnovers but the Owls couldn't capitalize and Murray struck again with 1:11 remaining to put the home team on top, 53-52. As the teams battled for every rebound in the final minute, McCarthy fouled Mitchell who made both attempts to put the Bonnies ahead, 55-52 with 16 seconds left. Both of Eaddys three-point attempts fell short, giving St. Bonaventure the win.
Mitchell and Murray each had 16 points to pace the Bonnies.
Temple takes a break from A-10 play next week, traveling to MAC opponent Central Michigan on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
