Filip and Kacper drop tough decision to top-seeded doubles team.
NORFOLK, Va. – Temple brothers Filip and Kacper Ram represented the Owls at the 2009 ITA/Wilson Atlantic Regional Collegiate Tennis Championship at Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion. The tournament is being held from Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25. Kacper opened singles play Thursday morning, while the duo teamed up for doubles action in the afternoon.
Kacper, a freshman competing in his first ITA championship, squared off against Maryland's Graham Knowlton. The junior Terp used experience to his advantage, downing the rookie 6-1, 6-2.
The Rams brothers then opened doubles play with a convincing 8-3 win over Longwood's David Cardoso and Nobu Tanaka. Second round action had the pair facing the fourth-ranked doubles team in the country and ITA/Wilson top-seeded Houston Barrick and Sanam Singh of Virginia. Filip and Kacper led the duo 7-5 before Barrick and Singh fought back to tie it up at 8-8. The Owls nearly pulled off the upset, but eventually fell to the Cavaliers' in the tiebreaker, 9-8(5).
"The Rams brothers proved today that they can play with any team in the country," commented head coach Steve Mauro. "I have high expectations that, by the end of the year, they'll be a top-10 doubles team in the country."
Filip, who received a bye in the first round of singles play, makes his run at the title with his first match on Friday, October 23 at 1 p.m. against Banjamin Chomette of Old Dominion. Chomette was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Georgetown's Brian Miller on Thursday afternoon.
