PHILADELPHIA – Temple University has been selected to host the 2011 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Philadelphia Regional at the Liacouras Center, as the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee today announced the hosts for the first and second round and regional games in 2011. The Philadelphia games will be played on March 27 and 29, 2011.
“We are pleased that the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee has seen fit to reward Temple University with this prestigious event,” Temple University Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw said. “This is a credit to our fine staff, in particular Associate Athletic Director Kristen Foley, who did a tremendous job of running the 2005 Women's Basketball Regional – one of the most successful regionals in the tournament's history.
This, coupled with the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball First and Second Rounds, is a great honor for the University as a whole. We are proud to be able to help showcase Temple, and to help make the city of Philadelphia a destination city for NCAA Championships.”
Temple has a history of hosting NCAA Championships, most recently being selected as a host of the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball first and second rounds at the Wachovia Center.
Under Bradshaw's eight-year tenure, Temple has also served as host for the 2005 Women's Basketball Regional, 2004 Women's Basketball first and second rounds and the 2003 Men's Gymnastics Championships. Prior to that, Temple successfully hosted the 1992 NCAA Regional at the Spectrum that featured the memorable Duke overtime win over Kentucky, 104-103, on Christian Laettner's buzzer-beater. Temple also hosted both the 1976 and 1981 NCAA Final Fours held at the Spectrum.
