ITHACA, N.Y. - The Temple men's tennis team wrapped up the fall season at the Cornell Men's Wicked Invitational on Sunday, November 1, 2009. Sophomores Matt King and Dmitry Vizhunov capped the weekend by winning their bracket in second doubles.
In singles play on Saturday, freshman Kacper Rams dropped a challenging 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(10) to Ashish Bhandari of Cornell at B Singles. At C Singles, Marist's Matt Himmelsbach got the best of Vizhunov, defeating the Owl 6-3, 6-4.
King made a solid run at D Singles. After advancing to the quarterfinals on Friday, he won by default in his only match of the day on Saturday. Sunday had him squaring off against Marcos Von Nordheim when the sophomore lost a tough one, 6-4, 6-4.
The main highlight of the weekend was the run by King and Vizhunov in doubles play. Saturday afternoon, the duo took on Jeremy McClelland and Gustavo Villares of Duquesne, defeating the pair 8-5. The classmates teamed up for another 8-5 victory in the semifinal round on Sunday, beating Ian Simms and Von Nordheim of Marist.
The championship bout was a tight one, but King and Vizhunov brought it home with a 9-7 victory over Mirza Klis and Charles Quay of the host team Cornell.
" This was a great way to end the fall season," said head coach Steve Mauro. "Dmitry Vizhunov and newcomer Matt King both played extremely well against a tough Cornell doubles team [in the championship match]. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the start of the spring season."
