Tight A-10 playoff race makes for critical contests this weekend
PHILADELPHIA – Two exciting conference matches for the Temple men's soccer team (8-6-2, 3-3-1 in A-10 play) this weekend could be the deciding factor in their quest for a run at the Atlantic 10 title. Hosting Saint Louis and 15th-ranked Charlotte, the Owls are tied with Duquesne for seventh in the A-10 heading into action this weekend.
The Owls have had trouble generating offense as of late, only tallying two goals in their last six contests. However, the defense has been up to the task, holding A-10 leading Fordham to a 0-0 draw last Sunday. The Cherry and White have hung in the regional rankings, currently owning the 10th place spot in this week's NSCAA Mid-Atlantic poll. They have been ranked as high as sixth this season.
Forward Tyler Witmer has shown no signs of a sophomore slump, leading the team in goals for the second straight year with six, ranking tied for seventh in the conference in that category. Senior midfielder J.T. Noone continues to find teammates for scoring opportunities, leading the team and conference with seven. Redshirt-junior keeper Bret Mollon recorded his sixth shutout of the season against Fordham last Sunday.
Saint Louis (10-6-0, 5-2-0 in A-10 play) is tied for third place with St. Bonaventure in the A-10 standings. Ranked 24th in the College Soccer News' preseason poll, the Billikens are led by sophomore forward Mike Roach. Roach is tied for fifth in the conference in goals scored, and tied for sixth in points alongside Witmer.
One of two nationally ranked A-10 foes, #15 Charlotte's (10-2-4, 4-1-2 in A-10 play) first conference loss came at the hands of now #23 Dayton last Friday. The 49ers topped Xavier 3-2 to finish out the weekend, with freshman Donnie Smith tallying twice in the first multi-goal game of his career. Highlighting Charlotte's season is a 3-0 shutout of national powerhouse Wake Forest (#4).
Before Sunday's contest, Temple will honor seniors Augustin Coly, Martin Dell'Arciprete, Bryant Hosler, J.T. Noone, Mike Puppolo, and Francois Sagna.
The Cherry and White take on Saint Louis on November 6th (2:00 p.m.) and finish the weekend with #15 Charlotte on November 8th (Senior Day, 1:00 p.m.).
