Owls honor team as well as five individuals for special accomplishments

PHILADELPHIA - Temple volleyball held its annual end-of-season banquet on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and took time to honor the successes of the team as well as its individuals. Administrators, coaches, support staff and the student-athletes were all on hand for the dinner and awards presentations.

Taking home the Team MVP Award was senior Yun Yi Zhang, well known for her on-court accomplishments this season. The same afternoon of the banquet, Zhang earned recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) when she was honored as a member of the All-Region Team for the Northeast Region. Zhang averaged 5.55 kills per set in 2009 to lead all players in NCAA Division I.

Senior Jackie Morrison was recognized specifically for her academic achievements, taking home the Owl Club Academic Award. Morrison has a 3.85 GPA as a communication science major, and was recently honored as a member of the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Morrison has earned numerous other academic awards in her career, including 2009 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area honors and 2009 Atlantic 10 Academic Team honors.

Co-recipients of the Coaches Award were junior Jess Antosz and sophomore Liz Prang. Head Coach Bob Bertucci spoke of the pair's intangible contributions to the team's success and well-being.

The 2009 Spirit Award also went to Morrison for her constant leadership and enthusiasm on and off the court.

Redshirt freshman Jasmine Waters took home Most Improved honors, after recently being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. Waters spent the 2008 season practicing with the team and then became a force for the Owls once she was on the court competing this season. She played in all 100 sets, averaging 1.57 kills per set along with 0.77 blocks per set to rank second on the team.
