NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Beating Rutgers on its home court by a score of 62-51, the Temple women's basketball team avenged its home loss to the Scarlet Knights (4-4) from a year ago and improved to 6-1 for the season.

Four players scored in double figures for Temple, led by LaKeisha Eaddy with 16 points. Shaqwedia Wallace added 14, Kristen McCarthy scored 12 and Natasha Thames came off the bench for a season-high 10 points, also tying for the team and game lead with seven rebounds.

The two teams have faced each other for nine straight seasons, but it was Temple's first win since 2005-06 and the first for the Owls' seniors.

“It means a lot,” said Eaddy. “We hadn't beaten them since I've been here, so to go out with a win definitely means a lot.”

Temple made 4-of-5 from the field to start the game and the Owls led 11-6 just over four minutes in. The Owls never trailed, but Rutgers' three-point shooting got the Scarlet Knights within a possession and they stayed there until near the seven-minute mark when Temple began to increase its lead.

Eaddy made back-to-back buckets, including her second of the game from long range, giving the Owls a 26-19 lead with six minutes remaining. With Temple's next possession after a Rutgers' turnover, McCarthy sank her second shot from behind the arc to give the Owls their first double-digit lead.

Rutgers went without a field goal for more than two minutes to end the half, but was a perfect 6-of-6 at the stripe. The Scarlet Knights narrowed the margin to five before Eaddy sank the final bucket of the half to give Temple a seven-point, 38-31 advantage heading into the break.

Eaddy went 5-for-6 from the field to lead the Owls with 12 points at halftime as they earned their highest first-half point total of the season.

The Scarlet Knights continued to trail but stay within close striking distance most of the second half, and pulled within three, 46-43, just after the midway point.

Turnovers by both teams kept scoring low, but the Owls were able to capitalize more often on Rutgers' mistakes, and used a 9-3 run to lead by nine, 54-45 at 4:10. Temple's largest lead of the game was 11, also the final margin, and the Scarlet Knights came within no fewer than nine in the final three and a half minutes.

McCarthy called Temple's only blemish of the season, a loss at Hartford four days ago, “a blessing in disguise,” saying the team has been able to come together and improve upon a lot of things in the last few practices.

Temple has nearly a week before its next game, a 7:00 p.m. road contest at Hampton on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
