Owls return multiple top-performers on both teams

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's and women's indoor track teams will each get their 2009-10 seasons underway on Saturday, December 5, when they compete in the Jack Pyrah Invitational at nearby Haverford College.

“We are definitely looking forward to the season starting,” commented head coach Eric Mobley. “The Jack Pyrah is a good meet to judge where we are at and how our fall training went. We are looking for good performances all around.”

On the men's side, the Owls return a number of their top performers from a year ago.

Senior Josue Louis will look to continue to lead the Owls in the hurdles and jumps. A year ago at the Jack Pyrah Invitational, Louis came away with a first place finish in the high jump (6-6¾) and a second place finish in the 55m hurdles (7.72). Classmate Tim Boeni returns after a second place finish in the long jump at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships last season.

In the throws, senior Grant West and junior Bob Keogh are both coming off strong showings during the 2008-09 season. West, who placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championships (59.87m) and 14th at NCAA Regional's (57.36m) in the hammer throw, claimed second last season at the Jack Pyrah Invitational in the weight throw (52-2½). Keogh finished third in the hammer throw (56.50) at the A-10 Championships and was also named to Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team.

The Owls will look to junior Mike May to continue his success from the cross country season, where he led Temple to its best fall in program history. A year ago, May took fifth in the 10,000m run at the A-10 Championships with a time of 30:57.36.

Sophomore Travis Mahoney, who is coming off an outstanding freshman season, will provide another strong threat in the distance events. Newcomer Eddie Penetar, also coming off a stellar cross country season, will add depth to the distance team.

Other additions include, freshmen Tim Malloy (hurdles) and Matt McGeehan (mid-distance), and juniors Derrhyl Duncan (400m) and Emmanuel Freeland (short-sprints) will have an impact for the Owls.

The women will also be able to rely on the experience of multiple upperclassmen.

Junior Paris Williams, the reigning A-10 Women's Track Indoor Performer of the Year, will anchor the sprints for the Owls during the 2009-10 season. Williams was also a member of the 4x400m relay team which finished second at the A-10 and the ECAC Championships, and 13th at the NCAA East Regional Championship.

Senior Melissa (Gale) Hand, whose career-best height of 3.50m in the pole vault is tied for the school record, will lead the Cherry and White in the event during her senior campaign. The Heislerville, N.J. native (Millville) claimed fourth at the A-10 Championships in the pole vault by clearing 3.35m.

A consistent leader of the cross country squad, junior Rebecca Mims will look to pace the Owls in the distance events, while seniors Sequoia McBall and Brittney McRae will provide experience and talent in the jumps.

Fresh faces on the women's side include freshmen Crystal Hercules (sprints), Rita Taste (sprints), Elizabeth-Paige White (sprints), Victoria Gocht (sprints), Tessa West (sprints), and Jade Wilson (hurdles).
