Box Score

Amherst, Mass.- Shenita Landry led three players in double figures with her 12th career double-double but could not offset a 33.3% shooting percentage, as the Temple womens basketball team (15-8, 6-3 A-10) fell, 71-60, to Massachusetts (10-14, 3-6 A-10).

Landry had a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Wallace posted 13 points, 11 in the first half. Shanea Cotton chipped in with 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half. LaKeisha Eaddy dished a game-high seven assists and had seven rebounds.

The Minutewomen out-rebounded the Owls, 46-40 and finished with a 43.6% shooting clip.

Temple got off to a slow start to begin the game and though it entered halftime with a one-point lead, the Owls had their worst shooting performance of the season, making just 23.5% of their shots. UMass provided the Cherry and White with 13 free throw opportunities but the visitors didn't do much better there, sinking just seven. Landry and Wallace were nearly unstoppable, combining for 19 of TU's 26 first stanza points. The Owls shot a bit better in the second half but not enough to overtake the hot-shooting minutewomen.

Umass took full advantage of early Temple turnovers and poor shooting to take a 10-0 lead by 16:18. Cotton finally got the Owls on the board with a lay-up at 16:03 and sparked a 10-0 run to tie the game just three minutes later. After a four-minute scoring drought, the Minutewomen went on a 5-0 run of their own, regaining the lead (15-10) with 12 minutes remaining. The Owls continued to struggle to make shots over the next few minutes, allowing UMass to build as much as a six-point lead. The visitors weren't down for long, however, as Landry and Wallace combined forces for a 10-3 run to give Temple a 24-20 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Kristen McCarthy's jumper at 2:10, gave TU its largest lead of the game (26-20) but UMass  5-0 run in the final two minutes of the game made it just 26-25 at the break.

UMass began the half with a 7-2 run to take a 32-28 lead just a minute and a half into the half. Temple battled back to tie the game at 32 but the Minutewomen continued to make shots, forcing TU to play catch-up. Lindsay Kimmel sank back-to-back three-pointers to put Temple back on top 41-40 with 14 minutes remaining. The teams traded the lead for the next few minutes until a 20-5 UMass run gave the Minutewomen a 61-49 lead, the largest of the game, with six minutes left to play. Landry refused to quit, scoring six straight points to get Temple within nine (64-55) with two minutes remaining, but that would be as close as it would be as UMass made seven free throws down the stretch to earn the 71-60 win.

Kristina Danella led four UMass players in double figures with 19 points, 15 of which came from beyond the arc, while Sakera Young had 14. Stephanie Lawrence and Diatiema Hill rounded out double figure scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Temple returns home to host A-10 and Philly-rival Saint Josephs on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Owls annual Pink Zone game.
