Charlotte, N.C.- Shenita Landrys block with three seconds remaining ended Charlottes comeback bid, as the Temple womens basketball team (17-8, 8-3 A-10), earned a hard fought 77-73 victory over Charlotte (18-7, 9-2 A-10) on Wednesday night. Landry led five players in double figures with a career-high 21 points, while Shanea Cotton and LaKeisha Eaddy chipped in with 15 points apiece. Shaqwedia Wallace contributed 13 points and Kristen McCarthy had 11.
Eaddy finished with eight assists for the second straight game and a contest-high three steals to end the 49ers nine-game winning streak. Cotton had a am-high seven rebounds, though Charlotte won the rebounding battle, 33-25. Both teams shot extremely well, as Temple finished with a 53.1% shooting clip and Charlotte made 49% of its shots.
The game was extremely tight in the first 10 minutes, as it featured four ties, including an 11-11 deadlock with just over 13 minutes remaining. Desperately trying to pull away, Charlotte forced three Temple turnovers and went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead at 12:43. The Owls came storming back, however, taking a 16-15 lead with a Shaqwedia Wallace trey at 11:20. The teams fast paced offense provided for a back and forth game for the remainder of the half, with no team able to put more than four points between it and its opposition. Two straight Temple turnovers in the final minute of the game allowed for a 37-34 result at the break.
Temple dominated out of the break, allowing Charlotte just seven points by the 12 minute mark. Shenita Landry sparked a 9-0 run to begin the second half, giving the Owls a 42-37 advantage with 17 and a half minutes to play and forcing Charlotte to take a time-out. The 49ers came out with a lay-up by Aysha Jones at 16:56, their first field goal of the second half, but Temple continued to hold a six-point lead, thanks to strong post play by Shanea Cotton. As the Charlotte offense began to break down, the Owls were able to extend their lead to as much as 13 points (55-42), their largest of the game, with just under 13 minutes to play. Charlotte refused to quit, however, and used a 23-7 run to take a 65-61 lead with just over five minutes to play. The 49ers made nine straight free throws during that stretch. Temple still had one more surge in it and used an 8-0 run to take back the lead, a 76-71, advantage with just 57 seconds to play. Charlotte continued to thrive at the free throw line, sinking two to make it a three point game with just 30 seconds to play. As the time ticked down, the 49ers tried desperately for a three but Landry would have none of it, blocking the home teams attempt with three seconds remaining.
Jones led the 49ers with 17 points, while Shannon McCallum had 16. Ashley Spriggs finished with 13 points and Burgin chipped in with 10.
Temple returns home to host Richmond on Saturday at 2 p.m.
