PHILADELPHIA - Temple improved to 4-0 this season at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center with a decisive 7-0 victory over Monmouth on Friday afternoon. The Owls won all six singles matches and took two of three in doubles to win for the third time in their last four tries.
The Cherry and White (5-6) won the doubles point after victories at number two by junior Pavlos Stephanides and freshman Mansur Gishkaev (8-2) and at number three by senior Nathan Spunda and freshman Dmitry Vizhunov (8-1).
In singles, Temple captured straight set wins at first, third and fourth singles, while Spunda won a hard-fought third-set tie break 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. Freshman Filip Rams won his team best 14th match of the year, including his third at #1, with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
Vizhunov won at third singles 6-2, 6-4, while Gishkaev had a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #4. With the match decided, the fifth and sixth singles matches were played to eight-game pro sets.
Senior Eduardo Saavedra won 8-6 at #5, while Stephanides won 8-5 at #6.
Monmouth drops to 2-3.
Temple has a two week break from matches before visiting A-10 rival Xavier on March 13.
