WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington captured victories at the first three singles spots to edge Temple, 4-3, in men's tennis action in the nation's capital. The Owls started off by winning the doubles point, but only could muster singles wins at fourth and sixth singles by freshman Dmitry Vizhunov and senior Eduardo Saavedra, respectively.
"It was a tough loss," head coach Steve Mauro said. "We had our chances but we weren't able to come through. We look forward to meeting them again."
Freshman Filip Rams and Saavedra earned a hard-fought 8-6 victory at first doubles over Ugar Atalay and Erik Hannah. Senior Nathan Spunda teamed with Vizhunov to give Temple the doubles point with a 8-4 win over Alex Sohalli and Chris Seckman.
Vizhunov won 6-1, 6-4 over Chris Kushma at fourth singles and Saavedra was a 6-2, 6-4 victor at #6 over Seckman, but the wins would be the only singles victories the Owls could muster.
Rams suffered a stomach injury at first singles and had to retire, leaving the Cherry and White without the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week for singles play. Freshman Mansur Gishkaev had a close match at fifth singles, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Sohaill.
GW improves to 1-3 with the victory.
The Owls (2-5) will host Richmond on Friday at 5 PM at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
