Men's Tennis Splits Pair Of A-10 Matches In Ohio

DAYTON, OH - The Temple men's tennis team resumed play after a two-week hiatus and split a pair of matches against Atlantic 10 opponents this weekend in Ohio. On Friday night, the Owls dropped a tough 5-2 match to Xavier but rebounded on Saturday to beat Dayton, 5-2. The Cherry and White improves to 6-7 with the victory.
Xavier 5, Temple 2
The Owls won the doubles point but could only muster one singles victory to fall to the host Musketeers (10-5), 5-2. Freshman Filip Rams and senior Eduardo Saavedra won 8-6 at first doubles and senior Nathan Spunda and freshman Dmitry Vizhunov won 8-4 at third doubles.
Vizhunov was the only TU singles player to capture a victory as he beat Richard Canelas, 7-5, 6-2 at #4. Spunda took Herrlinger to three sets before falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the only match to go the distance.
Temple 5, Dayton 2
The Cherry and White rebounded nicely on Saturday to beat the Flyers (5-9), 5-2. This time, the Owls dropped the doubles point before winning five of six singles matches for the win.
Spunda and Vizhunov won the only doubles match, 8-4, at #3 to give UD a 1-0 lead early.
Rams beat Michael Rohana, 6-5, retired at #1 and Spunda followed with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 win at #2. Vizhunov won his third straight singles match overall with a 7-5, 6-0 win over David Peyton at #4.
Freshman Mansur Gishkaev beat Michael Koscielski, 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and Saavedra beat Austin Wiegand, 7-6, 6-2 at #6.
Temple will be back in action on the road with a match at Duquesne against Toledo on Saturday.
