Owls Beat Duquesne, Fall To Toledo In Men's Tennis

PITTSBURGH, PA - Temple split a pair of matches this weekend at Duquesne, beating the host Dukes, 5-2, and falling to Toledo, 5-2. Freshmen Dmitry Vizhunov and Mansur Gishkaev each went 2-0 in singles to help the Owls improve to 7-8 this season.
Toledo 5, Temple 2
The Cherry and White dropped a close doubles point and managed only singles victories by Vizhunov and Gishkaev in a 5-2 loss to Toledo (12-7) on Saturday. Freshman Filip Rams and senior Eduardo Saavedra were the only doubles team to win, taking a 9-7 victory at #1. The other doubles matches were decided by 8-6 and 9-7 scores, respectively.
In singles, Vizhunov won, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 at #4 over Aleksander Eleczovic, while Gishkaev beat Jayson Miller, 6-0, 6-4 at #6. Rams took Jared Miller to three sets before falling, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
Temple 5, Duquesne 2
The Owls rebounded with a 5-2 victory over Duquesne on Sunday, improving their record against conference opponents to 3-2.
"It was a good win over an A-10 opponent," head coach Steve Mauro said. "We'll try to keep the momentum on Friday against UC Riverside."
Temple started by taking the doubles point after wins by Rams and Saavedra at #1 (8-5) and Vizhunov and senior Nathan Spunda at #3 (8-1).
In singles, the Cherry and White captured four victories, including the final three spots in the lineup. Rams beat Zachary Skorupka, 6-1, 6-4 at #1, while Vizhunov beat Gustavo Villeras, 6-3, 6-4 at #4.
At #5, Gishkaev beat Kyle O'Leary, 6-4, 6-3 while Saavedra defeated Jimmy Vogelgesang, 6-3, 6-2 at #6.
Vizhunov holds the team's longest singles winning streak at five matches and is 9-1 in his last 10. Gishkaev is 7-3 in his last 10.
The Owls will host UC Riverside on Friday at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center beginning at 1 PM.
