Men's Tennis Beats UC Riverside, 6-1

PHILADELPHIA - Senior Nathan Spunda returned to the number one singles position and led the Owls to a 6-1 victory over UC Riverside on Friday at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. Temple has now evened its overall record at 8-8.
"Today was the best doubles that we played all season," head coach Steve Mauro said. "We also had great singles play, especially Nate Spunda back at #1. He played excellenet beating a very good player in Macherez."
In doubles, freshman Filip Rams and senior Eduardo Saavedra captured an 8-5 win at #1 and senior Ricardo Velazquez and freshman Mansur Gishkaev won 8-4 at #2. Spunda and freshman Dmitry Vizhunov earned an 8-1 victory at #3 to give the Owls a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Spunda needed three sets to dispatch Felix Macherez at #1, beating him 1-6, 6-1, 7-5. Rams had a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-4 over John Park at #2. Vizhunov continued his strong play with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win at #4 over Austin Andres and Gishkaev beat Rainier Matias, 6-1, 6-1 at #5. Senior Pavlos Stephanides finished off the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Michael Conroy at #6.
UCR, who is on an east coast trip playing Penn, Temple and Villanova, drops to 4-14.
Temple will play host to Villanova on Wednesday at 2 PM at the TU Pavilion.
