MONROEVILLE, PA - The Temple men's tennis team bounced back from a close quarterfinal loss to Saint Louis to defeat Duquesne, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Club 4 Life. The Owls shuffled their lineup to account for missing freshman Filip Rams to injury and won four singles matches for the victory. TU will play Charlotte at 8 AM on Sunday for fifth place.
"The guys rebounded from a tough loss and I'm really proud the way we fought," head coach Steve Mauro said. "Despite missing Filip, the team had a great effort to beat a good Duquesne team."
The Cherry and White dropped the doubles point, as senior Nathan Spunda and freshman Dmitry Vizhunov were the only victors at #3 with a tight 9-8 win.
In singles, Vizhunov defeated Mark Maciuch, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in a three-setter at #3, while classmate Mansur Gishkaev beat Gustavo Villares, 7-5, 6-4 at #4.
At #5, senior Eduardo Saavedra defeated Jimmy Vogelsong, 6-0, 6-2 and junior Pavlos Stephanides downed Rafael Santiago, 6-4, 6-1 at #6.
The fifth place showing would be the best for Temple since finishing third in 2006.
