Men's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight With 7-0 Shutout Of Rider

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's tennis team won its fifth straight match in dominating fashion, beating Rider, 7-0, on Tuesday at the TU Pavilion. The Owls (11-8) remained undefeated at home with a 7-0 record and is 7-3 against regional opponents. TU cruised through doubles and did not drop a set in six singles wins.
"It was another good win for the men's team," head coach Steve Mauro said. "We played well on a cold and windy day and are preparing for A-10s."
TU swept the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Filip Rams and senior Eduardo Saavedra won 8-1 at #1 and senior Ricardo Velazquez and freshman Mansur Gishkaev won 8-1 at #2. Junior Pavlos Stephanides and sophomore newcomer Josh Rultenberg, a transfer from Rider, won 8-0 at #3.
In singles, Rams beat Casey Jedlinski, 6-0, 6-0 at #1 to increase his conference best win total to 22. Velazquez beat Will Haight by default at #2, and Vizhunov beat Chris Esposito, 6-0, 6-2, at #3.
Gishkaev beat Aaron Goldenthal, 6-1, 6-0 at #4 and Stephanides defeated Mike Kulpinski, 6-0, 6-0 at #5. Rultenberg bested Alex D'Amico, 6-0, 6-2, at #6.
Rider falls to 2-15 with the loss.
The Owls host Big 5 rival on Wednesday at the TU Pavilion.
