Owls Edge Villanova, 4-3, For Sixth Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA - Temple won its sixth straight match and completed its home schedule with a perfect 8-0 record by edging Villanova, 4-3, on Wednesday at the TU Pavilion. The Owls split the singles matches with the Wildcats but won the doubles point to improve to 12-8 on the season.
"I was especially happy for our seniors today, playing in their last match on campus," head coach Steve Mauro said. "A freshman though, Dmitry Vizhunov, played really well today. We look to end our regular season with a win against La Salle on Tuesday."
Senior Eduardo Saavedra and freshman Filip Rams combined for a close 9-8 victory at #1 doubles, while senior Ricardo Velazquez and freshman Mansur Gishkaev won 8-5 at #2 to give the hosts the doubles point.
In singles, senior Nathan Spunda improved to 4-0 since moving into the top spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alex Leeser. Rams beat Brian Maher, 6-4, 6-3, for his sixth straight victory.
Vizhunov beat Zack Siegler, 6-4, 6-2, at #5 for the third and final singles win. He is now 9-1 in his last 10 matches.
In addition to winning its last six matches, TU is 8-2 since February 27 and has a 8-3 record against teams in the region.
The Owls will conclude the regular season at La Salle on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
