Owls Compete In Day One Of A-10 Championships

CHARLOTTE, NC - After one full day of competition at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Charlotte, the Temple men's and women's track teams are both still in contention for the title. The men's squad finds themselves in second place with 62 points behind Charlotte, while the women start Sunday's action in sixth with 29 points.
For the men, freshman Eric Brittingham was the Owls' lone first place finisher on the day, taking the title in the javelin in only his first appearance at the A-10's. Brittingham met IC4A qualifying marks and nearly nabbed NCAA Regional's with a throw of 60.32m.
Also in the field for the men, junior Grant West and sophomore Bob Keogh finished two-three in the hammer throw. West met NCAA Regional qualifying marks with a throw of 59.87m, while Keogh's throw of 56.50m met IC4A marks.
In the long jump, junior Tim Boeni took second with an IC4A qualifying jump of 7.30m. Along with Boeni, junior Joshua Louis nabbed a second place finish, posting a height of 1.99m in the high jump. Louis qualified for the 110m hurdle finals, placing fourth in a time of 14.54. Also in preliminary action, sophomore Miles Dryden will be competing in Sunday's 100m dash finals, clocking in a fourth-place qualifying time of 10.98.
Other notable performances were had by sophomore Mike May in the 10000m run (5th, 30:57.36), freshman Travis Mahoney in the 3000m steeplechase (7th, 9:16.39), and the 4x800m relay team of Marquise Stancil, Aaron Taylor, Mitch Stroh, and Jason Sullivan (5th, 7:32.39).
On the women's side, junior Brittney McRae and senior Amanda Cole both put down second place finishes in their respective events. McRae posted an ECAC qualifying mark in the long jump with a distance of 5.90m. Cole met NCAA Regional qualifying marks again in the hammer throw, placing second with a toss of 54.64m.
In the pole vault, junior Melissa Gale solidified a fourth place finish for the Owls, clearing a height of 3.35m.
Senior Devon DuPont took two first place finishes and one second place finish through four events in the heptathlon, and is looking to capture the title for the second straight year.
In preliminary action, the duo of Brittney McRae and Brittany Clybourn will be competing in the 100m dash finals on Sunday.
