PHILADELPHIA - Eleven of Temple University's 23 varsity sports teams, including men's basketball, earned a perfect 1000 APR score while the Owls' football team posted a 960, its highest one-year score ever, as the NCAA released its APR data for the 2007-08 academic year. Baseball also posted its highest-ever score with a 989 APR score.
"We are extremely proud of the academic success of our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "These APR scores, especially in the sport of football which we have had to overcome some challenges, reflect the hard work of the coaches, student-athletes and the recently restructured academic support staff."
Football, which has made significant strides in the classroom during the tenure of head coach Al Golden, was granted a waiver by the NCAA for an occasion III historical penalty as the program's four-year score of 891 fell below the 900 APR threshold. The three-year APR average for Temple football, which reflects the team's current student-athletes and the recruiting classes since Golden's arrival is 922, well above the APR threshold for historical penalties.
Besides men's basketball, the following Temple sports received perfect 1000 scores for 2007-08: men's golf, men's gymnastics, women's cross country, field hockey, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's outdoor track and women's volleyball.
