PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's soccer team has been picked to finish sixth in the Atlantic 10 in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. The Owls, who posted a 6-1-2 record in the A-10 last season (10-5-4 overall), were predicted to finish behind Dayton, Saint Louis, Massachusetts, Charlotte, and Rhode Island.
Owls' head coach David MacWilliams led the Cherry and White to a second-place finish in the regular season standings in 2008, their best since 1990. The Owls made their first post-season appearance since 2004, falling to Dayton in the semi-finals. During the regular season, TU upset then #22 Dayton, 4-2.
In his ninth season at the helms, MacWilliams returns in 2009 with much of the same squad, losing one starter on defense while retaining his offensive attack.
One of the key pieces to his explosive scoring attack is second-team preseason All-America honoree J.T. Noone. Back to command the midfield, Noone led the conference in assists a year ago (13), ranking third nationally in assists per game (.68).
The Owls open the season with an exhibition match at Drexel on August 29 (5:00 p.m.). Temple's first regular season match is slated for Friday, September 4 (3:30 p.m.) versus Soccer 7 rival Villanova at Ambler Sports Complex.
