STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Temple volleyball team split matches in State College on Saturday, sweeping St. Francis (Pa.) in the afternoon before falling 3-0 to the top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. A crowd of 3,813 was on hand to see the Owls play two-time defending national champs Penn State, who won their 76th consecutive match.
In the early match, Temple swept the Red Flash of St. Francis by scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-16.
Senior Yun Yi Zhang registered a double-double in the win against St. Francis with a match-high 15 kills along with 12 digs.
The Owls were impressive both offensively and defensively, hitting .359 as a team and tallying 57 digs to the Red Flash's 40.
Senior setter Jackie Morrison recorded assists on 33 of Temple's 42 kills as well as tallying five kills of her own, and nine digs.
Zhang led the Owls once again vs. Penn State, knocking down 14 kills and recording five digs. Morrison tallied four kills to go along with 19 assists and four digs.
Three-time All-American Megan Hodge led Penn State with 24 kills as Temple lost by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-12.
Temple came out strong in front of the impressive crowd, keeping with the NIttany Lions early at 4-4. Penn State pulled ahead 17-9, but Zhang got the Owls back into it with four kills in six points to pull within 19-13. From there, attack errors on Temple followed by back-to-back Penn State kills ended the set in favor of the Nittany Lions.
The Owls begin the Atlantic-10 season next weekend with two home matches. First up is Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
