Box Score
PHILADELPHIA – The first Atlantic-10 match of the season went the way of the Owls as Temple (5-5, 1-0) earned a 3-1 victory against Charlotte (9-7, 0-1) by scores of 25-17, 26-24, 19-25 and 25-22.
Temple junior Yun Yi Zhang, who currently leads all players in NCAA Division I in kills per set, put up strong numbers yet again with a match-high 23 kills. Senior setter Jackie Morrison recorded a double-double with 42 assists and 12 digs, while freshman Chelsea Tupuola was also strong on defense with 11 digs.
Junior Jess Antosz came up big for the Owls with eight kills and just one error for a team-high hitting percentage of .412, and junior Cayleigh Ashman tallied a season-high 10 kills.
Temple was the dominant team early in the match, out-hitting the 49ers .333 to .065 in the first set and leading throughout to earn the 25-17 win.
“We came out really well in the first set,” said head coach Bob Bertucci. “I thought we really took control and dictated the tempo early on.”
The second set was made much more exciting as Charlotte started putting the pressure on, and the 49ers got themselves in position to take the set with a 24-21 lead. That's when Antosz and Ashman stepped up, combining for three kills as Temple came all the way back to win 26-24.
“Charlotte came out hard after the first set,” commented Bertucci. “They looked like a different team and I think it shocked us a little bit. It was good that we came back. We played a little sloppy in the third set. We need to remember to stay focused on each point and not get ahead of ourselves.”
Strong blocking for Charlotte combined with fewer errors helped the 49ers pull away at the end of the third set. With the score tied at 17-17, Charlotte used an 8-2 run to take the win, and Kathleen Hicks knocked down two kills in the final three points, including the set-winner.
Temple improved its hitting percentage in the fourth set and began to pull away at the midway point. After tallying just three kills in the third set, Zhang came out stronger to knock down six in the fourth.
Temple will be back in action tomorrow against George Washington at 4:00 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
