PHILADELPHIA – Behind 20 kills from Yun Yi Zhang, the Temple volleyball team swept George Washington in three close sets to improve to 2-0 in the Atlantic 10. The Owls (6-5, 2-0) defeated the Colonials (9-5, 1-1) by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-23.
Numerous ties and lead changes marked all three sets, which all came down to battles for the final few points. With the Owls leading 23-22 in the first set, a kill from Zhang gave Temple set point, but the Colonials' Abyy Syverson answered with a kill. Zhang then knocked down another to put Temple up 1-0 for the match.
GW had set point in the second set after a kill by Leah Hill put her team up 24-23, but Zhang answered, and after a ball handling error on the Colonials, Temple freshman Chelsea Tupuola put the set away with a service ace.
The third set saw 11 ties, the last at 20-20. George Washington's errors then added up to give Temple the set and the match.
Tupuola finished with a match-high 12 digs for the Owls. Jovana Radojevic and Jess Antosz each tallied four kills with zero errors, along with four blocks apiece for Temple.
“Our team chemistry is really good right now,” commented head coach Bob Bertucci. “These girls really want to win, and they're putting the effort out there. This match was a little bit of who made fewer errors, so that's one thing we need to work on, cleaning up our play.”
Temple will be back in action next weekend on the road at Dayton and Xavier, starting with a 7:00 p.m. match at Dayton on Friday, Oct. 2.
