2009-10 Temple Women's Basketball Schedule
PHILADELPHIA – Eight 2009 NCAA Tournament participants and an ESPN2 contest at Xavier highlight the 2009-10 Temple women's basketball schedule, which also includes five opponents that were nationally-ranked at the end of the season. The Owls will face four of the eight tournament teams at home, including Auburn and Duke.
“Our home schedule is demanding, but also very exciting,” said second-year head coach Tonya Cardoza. “Our fans will see some very high-level basketball games. We can only achieve our goals by playing other strong teams, and we are certainly doing that this season.”
After facing Illinois out of the Big Ten in their home opener on Nov. 13 at McGonigle Hall, the Owls will welcome Auburn to campus on Nov. 17. Auburn, ranked 13th at the end of last season, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before being upset in a 7/2 seed matchup by Rutgers, also on Temple's schedule.
Temple will utilize both the Liacouras Center and McGonigle Hall for its home contests, playing seven games at each facility.
The Owls will travel to tournament participant and Ivy League champion Dartmouth for their first road game on Nov. 19. After a contest at Buffalo on Nov. 21, Temple will play Eastern Michigan at home on Nov. 24 as part of the first of four doubleheaders with the men's basketball team.
Temple will travel to Hartford on Nov. 28, and then to Big East powerhouse Rutgers on Dec. 2. The Scarlet Knights advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 2009 and finished the season ranked 21st.
Action in the month of December continues with road games at Hampton (Dec. 8) and Kent State (Dec. 12) along with a home contest vs. Ohio (Dec. 10). The Owls will face Villanova at home on Dec. 20 in a game televised by CBS College Sports. The Wildcats lost in the NCAA Tournament's first round last season after earning an at-large berth out of the Big East.
Following the holiday break, Temple will travel to Akron (Dec. 28) before facing Duke at home on Dec. 31. Duke advanced to the second round last season where the Blue Devils were upset by Michigan State.
The non-conference schedule wraps up with a road game at Florida State on Jan. 3, a team that also advanced to the NCAA second round last year.
Temple opens the Atlantic-10 slate by traveling to Xavier on Jan. 10 in an ESPN2 televised game. The Owls were the only A-10 team to defeat Xavier in the regular season last year, scoring the upset in their final home contest of the year against the 13th-ranked Musketeers.
Three of Temple's seven A-10 home games will be part of doubleheaders, Saint Joseph's (Jan. 16), St. Bonaventure (Jan. 30) and Charlotte (Feb. 13). The Owls will also play at home against Fordham (Jan. 13), Massachusetts (Feb. 10) and Duquesne (Feb. 17) before wrapping up the regular season at home against George Washington (Feb. 27).
Other A-10 road contests will be played at Rhode Island (Jan. 19), Saint Louis (Jan. 27), Saint Joseph's (Feb. 2), La Salle (Feb. 6), Dayton (Feb. 20) and Richmond (Feb. 24).
As part of its Big 5 schedule, Temple will face Penn at home on Jan. 23.
This year's Atlantic 10 Tournament will be held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., from March 5-8.
