PHILADELPHIA – Holding Fordham scoreless for a stretch of over 13 minutes in the second half, the Temple women's basketball team cruised to a 67-34 win over the visiting Rams (6-11, 0-2) in Atlantic 10 action on Wednesday night. The Owls drained 11 three-pointers, with five coming from Qwedia Wallace who finished with a game-high 17 points.
Temple (11-5, 1-1) snapped a three-game losing streak and earned its first A-10 win as four players scored in double figures. BJ Williams went 3-of-5 from behind the arc en route to 13 points, and notched her first career double-double with 10 assists.
Kristen McCarthy recorded her fourth-straight double-figure scoring game with 13 points, and Marli Bennett added 10 points including two treys.
Randall Hurst led Fordham with a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Temple scored on its first possession and never trailed in the contest, but Fordham kept within striking distance for most of the first half. The Owls' largest lead was the halftime tally of 31-18, coming after a three-pointer from Wallace which was Temple's seventh of the half.
With a 39-29 lead just over five minutes into the second half, Temple held Fordham scoreless for a stretch of 13:36, until 59 seconds remained in the game. The Owls had built a 38-point point lead at that point. Fordham closed out the game with back-to-back buckets to bring the final margin to 33.
“I've been happy with our effort the past couple of weeks, the way we've come out and played with a lot of intensity and passion for the game,” said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza. “It had been awhile since we'd really put away a team when we had a big lead, and it was great to be able to do that tonight.”
Temple will return to action with another home game this Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Saint Joseph's. The game will follow a Temple men's game, and both will take place at the Liacouras Center.
