Fall season coming to a close for squad
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple men's tennis team was in competition at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion, on Friday-Sunday, October 8-10, 2010. The Owls sent seven players to Virginia for one of the final tournaments of the fall.
The Cherry & White faced tough competition in the singles rounds, with Filip Rams, Andrey Morozov and Taylor Hairston each advancing to the semifinal round before falling.
Rams moved beyond the opening round with a walkover, and then advanced to the semis with a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(8) against Sebastien Vidal of William & Mary at the first singles. Arsenio Culver of Norfolk State was getting the best of the Temple team captain before Rams was forced to retire due to injury.
Morozov got a bye in his first round at second singles before taking Aaron Benjamin of Morgan State out in a 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal match, before falling in the semis to William & Mary's Adrian Vodislav, 6-1, 6-3. Vodislav went on to win the flight.
Hairston defeated his first two opponents in straight-sets, but dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(9) match to Daniel Mihalov from William & Mary to end his quest for a title at second singles.
In doubles action, brothers Filip and Kacper Rams teamed up again to finish second at the top flight. The duo defeated Delaware's Chris Hincker and Courtney Scott 9-7 in the opening round, and then knocked off Tim Johannsen and Jamie Vazquez of VCU, 8-5. Drexel's Manu Bajpai and Nikoloz Kurdadze finally got to the pair in the championship match, taking it 8-1.
The squad wraps up the fall season with play at the ITA Regionals at Virginia on October 20-24, 2010.
