RICHMOND, Va. – The Temple men's tennis team got the 2011 spring season underway with its play in the VCU 4x1 Invitational on Saturday, January 29. The Owls defeated George Mason, 3-2, before picking up another 3-2 win against Richmond.
In the first match of the day, junior captain Filip Rams and freshman Taylor Hairston gave TU an early edge with a 6-1, 6-2 win over George Mason's Sam Coster and Chris Borden in the doubles match. The Patriots made things interesting with wins at the number one and number four singles flights to go ahead 2-1, but juniors Mansur Gishkaev and Stanislav Stekolshikov came through with victories at three and four to secure the win. Gishkaev defeated Taylor Sargent 7-5, 6-2, before Stekolshikov clinched it with a 7-6, 6-2 defeat of Jordan Borsanyi.
Against Richmond, Rams again provided an early point for the Owls, this time picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sebastien Fauchet at first singles. Hairston followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Justin Baker at number four for the 2-0 advantage. After a win from the Spiders at number two cut it to 2-1, junior Dmitry Vizhunov scored the match point with a 6-4, 6-3 win against A.J. Nelson at number three. Richmond took the doubles point, but the match was already decided in singles play.
“Today's matches were a good start to our season,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “All of the guys came out and played well across the board. It was nice to get wins over two quality teams, including an Atlantic 10 rival [Richmond].”
Temple is back in action tomorrow with a match against Longwood at 10 a.m.
