RICHMOND, Va. – With the match tied at 2-2, it came down to two freshmen battling it out to decide the winner of the Temple vs. Longwood men's tennis match at the VCU 4x1 Invitational on Sunday, January 30, 2011. The Lancers' Jimmy Davis outlasted TU's Taylor Hairston in a three-set thriller to claim the 3-2 victory for Longwood.
Junior Filip Rams gave Temple a 1-0 edge with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Nobu Tanaka at first singles, before the Lancers won two-straight at second and third singles to go up 2-1.
Juniors Mansur Gishkaev and Andrey Morozov knotted it up with a tough three-set win over Milo Barajas-Alexander and Edward Becker at the doubles slot. The Cherry and White duo dropped the opening set 3-6, but rebounded to take the next two, 6-3, 6-4.
That set up the dramatic finish between the two rookies. Hairston held on for an intense 7-6 (8) tiebreaker win in the first set. But Davis came back to outlast TU's youngster, winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 to give Longwood the victory.
Temple (2-1) returns to the courts on Wednesday, February 2, with a 4 p.m. match at cross-city rival Penn.
