Men's Tennis Drops Tough 4-3 Decision at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple men's tennis team gave it everything it had against Penn on Wednesday evening at the Levy Tennis Pavilion, falling in heartbreaking fashion, 4-3, to the host Quakers.
In a marathon match that lasted more than four hours, Penn's Hicham Laalej provided the clinching victory for the Red and Blue. With the score knotted at 3-3, the match came down to the first singles flight. Junior Filip Rams took the first set 6-7 and jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the second, before Laalej came from behind for a 7-5 win to even the match at one set apiece. In the final set, Laalej captured the first point and didn't look back, fighting his way to a 6-4 victory.
The Owls had taken the early lead with the doubles point after Filip Rams and freshman Taylor Hairston won 8-5 at the first flight, and sophomore Kacper Rams and junior Dmitry Vizhunov defeated their opponents by the same score at number three.
The Quakers quickly made it a 3-1 advantage with wins at the second, third and fourth singles flights. Hairston got the Cherry and White back on the board with a three-set victory over Zach Katz at number six, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Vizhunov kept hope alive for TU with his exciting three-set win (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) at the fourth flight over Jason Magnes to set up the thrilling finish between Filip Rams and Laalej.
Temple is 2-2 and will open the home portion of its schedule on Friday, February 4, with a 12 p.m. match against Drexel at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
