PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team filled the 2009-10 season with highlights, but it was the unreached goals that will fuel the Owls to even higher expectations of themselves this year. On Friday, Oct. 15, the team will have its first official practice of the 2010-11 season, and both coaches and players are excited for what the future holds.
"We're really looking forward to Friday's practice," said third-year head coach Tonya Cardoza. "I'm excited about the possibilities we have this year. We have a lot of new faces and we're going to try to change our style a little bit."
Under the guidance Cardoza, who is 46-19 over two seasons at Temple, the Owls return three starters, six letterwinners and have a group of promising newcomers hoping to make an immediate impact.
Temple was 25-9 overall last year and earned a berth in its seventh-straight NCAA Tournament, where the eighth-seeded Owls defeated ninth-seeded James Madison in the first round. The Owls went on to lose to eventual national champ Connecticut in the second round.
Temple is looking for its first Atlantic 10 title since 2006 after barely missing out last season. The Owls advanced to the A-10 final but fell by two points in overtime to #5 Xavier.
"Everyone looks great," said senior veteran Qwedia Wallace. "We're working hard, and I expect big things. We lost a lot of talent but we also gained just as much, so I'm looking forward to this season and I think it's going to be a big one. Hopefully we're going to bring that A-10 title here."
Junior Kristen McCarthy is the Owls' leading returner after averaging a team-high 14.8 points per game as a sophomore. McCarthy was an A-10 First Team selection, and provided one of last year's top highlights in a home win against Charlotte when she scored a program-record 42 points.
Coming up big for Temple in its late-season games last year was Wallace, who is now back for her senior season and looking to be a more consistent offensive threat. She finished last season as the team's second-leading scorer with 10.6 points per game.
Temple's third returning starter is senior center Marli Bennett who averaged 6.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as a junior.
Junior transfer Shey Peddy sat out last year due to NCAA transfer rules and will look to make an impact at guard for the Owls. Junior transfer Joelle Connelly will be eligible in December, and the Owls have a third junior transfer in 5-8 guard Satoria Bell who is eligible to start the season. Two true freshmen, Ryia Newsome and Nikki Works, also join the Owls this year.
