Owls Host Akron in PINK OUT Game on Saturday

THIS WEEK
Temple returns home to Lincoln Financial Field for its annual Breast Cancer Awareness PINK OUT game against Akron. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The first 5,000 fans will receive pink pom pons. The Owls' radio broadcast will air on WHAT 1340 AM with Harry Donahue calling the play-by-play and Steve Joachim providing color analysis.
All-MACcess will carry live video streaming of the game. Live gametracker stats and video streaming will be available on the Temple Athletics website at www.OwlSports.com.
Following Saturday's game is the annual Parent-Child Touchdown Pass competition. All children— aged 14 and under— accompanied by an adult, can score a touchdown on the field after the game.
Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Al Golden, Temple stands 6-2 overall (3-1 in the MAC) after a 42-0 victory at Buffalo. The 2010 squad returns 21 starters to 16 positions. The Owls utilize an?East Coast offense and 4-3 defense.
Sophomore RB Matt Brown (Baltimore, Md.) leads all rushers with 613 yards and six touchdowns on 111 carries. Senior WR Michael Campbell (Edison, N.J.) is the top receiver with 336 yards and four touchdowns on 23 receptions. R-junior QB Chester Stewart (Hanover, Md.) went 72-of-135 for 842 yards and four touchdowns, while r-junior QB Mike Gerardi (Parsippany, N.J.) is 18-of-30 for 294 yards an fives touchdowns in two games.. Senior DB Jaiquawn Jarrett (Brooklyn, N.Y.) leads the defense with 63 tackles, including a team-high 35 solos.
In the national rankings, Temple ranks No. 29 in pass efficiency defense (115.27), No. 34 in kickoff returns (23.50), No. 25 in pass defense (195.50) and No. 39 in scoring defense (20.63). Individually, junior DB Delano Green is No. 36 in punt returns (8.79) and junior DT Muhammad Wilkerson is No. 42 in sacks (0.69).
Akron, under the guidance of first-year head coach Rob Ianello, is 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the MAC after a 56-10 loss against?Northern Illinois. Akron and New Mexico are the nation's only winless teams entering play this week. The Zips return 17 starters to their pro style offense and 4-3 defense.
Senior RB Alex Allen is the Zips' leading rusher with 450 yard and six touchdowns on 101 carries. Sophomore QB Patrick Nicely is 103-of-214 for 1,048 yards and three touchdowns, while junior QB?Matt Rodgers is 7-of-11 for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Senior WR Jeremy LaFrance is the top receiver with 364 yards and three touchdowns on 28 receptions. Sophomore LB Brian Wagner leads the defense with 83 tackles, a sack, and an interception.
TEMPLE-AKRON CONNECTIONS
Temple has no players on its roster from the state of Ohio.
Akron has 13 players from Pennsylvania but none from Philadelphia. The only player from Southeastern Pennsylvania is senior OL Corey Woods (Reading, Pa. / Exeter Twp. HS).
TEMPLE-AKRON— THE SERIES
Today's game marks the 20th meeting between the Owls and the Zips since the squads' first meeting in 1967. In series action, Temple leads, 12-7.
Last fall at InfoCision Stadium, Temple scored 49 unanswered points en route to a 56-17 win on Friday the 13th. QB Chester Stewart threw two touchdowns while rushing for two TDs, opening the scoring with a 63-yard TD reception to WR Michael Campbell.
In 2008 during Senior Day at Lincoln Financial Field, seniors QB Adam DiMichele and FB Marcellous Grigsby scored two touchdowns apiece to lead Temple to a 27-6 win in the season finale. The victory gave the Owls five wins on the season (and four in?MAC play).
During their first game as MAC opponents in 2007, QB Adam DiMichele threw for three fourth quarter touchdowns, the last a 19-yarder to WR Dy'Onne Crudup with 27 seconds to play, to lead Temple to a 24-20 come-from-behind win at the Rubber Bowl. It marked the first time the Owls posted consecutive wins since 2002 and the first consecutive victories in conference play in 40 years when the Cherry and White played in the old MAC (Middle Atlantic Conference). It was also the team's first road win since 2003, snapping a string of 24 straight road defeats.
In the teams' 1999 meeting, Akron scored 25 first-half points en route to a 25-15 win at the Rubber Bowl. Temple scored all 15 of its points in the fourth quarter. Marcus Godrey led the Owls on the ground with 16 carries for 67 yards. QB Mac Devito scored TU's first touchdown on a two-yard run. Devito closed out the stanza with a 43-yard toss to Sean Dillard for the second touchdown.
